History
In 1997, a group of newly certified Philippine ophthalmologists, fresh from medical training in Manila, returned to Iloilo, eager to set up practice in their hometown. Unfortunately, they soon realized that no laser or phacoemulsification machines could be found on the entire island of Panay.
As fate would have it, the doctors discovered that, just two years before, Jose Mari Chan, the Ilonggo businessman and singer-songwriter, had joined a group of ophthalmologists and local businessmen in Negros Occidental to set up the Tony Chan Memorial Eye Center in Bacolod. Consequently, the Ilonggo doctors convinced Mr. Chan to help them establish a second eye center in Iloilo, with the aim to make it bigger and better than the first.
Thus, in July of 1998, Panay Eye Center, Inc. was born. Situated within Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital, it became the first eye center in Panay to offer specialized vision testing and ophthalmic laser procedures, as well as modern cataract surgery via Phacoemulsification.
